Westlake Village

The City of Westlake Village was formed as a result of an overwhelming vote on December 11, 1981, as the 82nd municipality in Los Angeles County. Located on the eastern side of the Ventura/Los Angeles County line, Westlake Village is a unique, master-planned community. The lakeside and surrounding area development was begun in 1966 by the American Hawaiian Steamship Company.  With a total land area of 5.4 square miles, the community supports a population of 8,508.  A F International School of Languages Inc. Thousand Oaks

Thousand Oaks, a city of more than 120,000  people, is conveniently located 39 miles west of Los Angeles and 12 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. The City of Thousand Oaks lies within the Conejo Valley, a picturesque, mountain-rimmed plateau, 900 feet above sea level at the Ventura/Los Angeles County Line. Thousand Oaks continually ranks as one of the safest cities for its size in the nation by FBI reporting standards. Average temperatures range between 65-75 degrees during summer months and 53-69 degrees during winter months; average rainfall is 14.98 inches per year. Agoura Hills

The turn of the millennium brought continued prosperity to Agoura Hills including the opening of its own Community Center, a joint project with neighboring City of Calabasas in 1999, and its brand new Civic Center and Library in 2001. The new buildings provide new convenience and services to residents of Agoura Hills and its surrounding communities. Today the city is actively involved in the economic development of the area. The City continues its efforts to beautify the freeway corridor so that when travelers drive through the City of Agoura Hills, they will wish to stop to visit. For those traveling through, the scenic beauty of the area is to be preserved and enjoyed. Camarillo

The fourth largest city in Ventura County, Camarillo claims slightly more than 61,500 residents. Occupying just over 19 square miles of land, the city enjoys an unusually high percentage of college-educated and professionally-employed residents and ranks third among Ventura County's ten cities in median family income. The city's growth and development is guided by its General Plan. This document is the comprehensive guide to residential, commercial and industrial land uses in the community, designating appropriate locations where the individual uses can support and complement one another. The General Plan both ensures compatibility of new development with the community's existing physical, social and economic characteristics and reflects the community goals adopted by the Camarillo City Council in 1992. Oxnard

Ojai

Ojai, whose name is derived from a Chumash Indian word meaning "moon," has a rich and colorful past. Santa Paula

The picturesque City of Santa Paula is located 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 14 miles east of Ventura and the coastline of the Pacific Ocean. Santa Paula is the geographical center of Ventura County, situated in the rich agricultural Santa Clara River Valley. The City is surrounded by rolling hills and rugged mountain peaks in addition to orange, lemon and avocado groves. In fact, Santa Paula is referred to as the "Citrus Capital of the World". The City is a major distribution point for citrus fruits in the United States and is also noted for avocado producing and processing. Calabasas

It is generally accepted that Calabasas means pumpkin, squash, or gourd, derived from the Spanish "calabaza". Some historians hold the theory that it is merely a translation of the Chumash word "calahoosa", but since that also refers to some type of gourd, it only matters to linguists. Whatever the derivation of Calabasas, we’re proud of our odd name, and every October, the City of Calabasas and the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce hosts a "Pumpkin Festival" to celebrate fall, the local wares and talents of Calabasas merchants, and of course, the pumpkin for which our colorful city was named. The City's official logo, depicting the red-tailed hawk flying over the Santa Monica Mountains, symbolizes a commitment to preserving the community's natural beauty and semi-rural quality of life.  The City logo is featured on the Calabasas City flag which is flown in front of City Hall and hangs in the City Council Chambers. Malibu

The City of Malibu was incorporated on March 28, 1991. Located in Northwest Los Angeles County, the City has 21 miles of coastline along the Pacific Ocean and has a population of 12,575. Port Hueneme

Schools

The Conejo Valley Unified School District is located 50 miles northwest of Los Angeles and serves a suburban, largely middle to upper middle class community. The student population is drawn from the communities of Newbury Park, Thousand Oaks, and Westlake Village. The District's rich history has led to strong traditions working toward a vision of the future. This is a family oriented community with large parent involvement and support. The community is rich with cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic diversity.

The District is comprised of 19 elementary schools, with a new elementary school opened in fall 1998, 4 middle schools, 3 comprehensive high schools, 2 alternative high schools, and an adult school. The enrollment in 1997-98 was approximately 19,300 students in grades K-12 and 9,000 students in Adult Education.

Family Recreation

The Conejo Recreation and Park District, an independent special district, was formed in January 1963. The formation of the District was approved by 80 percent of the voters. It was voter choice to have a separate governmental entity to provide their leisure and recreational needs.

The Conejo Recreation and Park District covers 63 square miles and serves a population of more than 110,000 people in Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, and the Ventura County portion of Westlake Village. The District works with other public agencies such as the City of Thousand Oaks and the Conejo Valley Unified School District as well as a wide variety of organizations and businesses to provide comprehensive park, recreation and leisure services.

More than 2,500 organized recreation and leisure programs are conducted each year. Thirty-three developed parks, five play field parks and one district-wide park in addition to the 1,300 acre Wildwood Park, 12,000 acres of open space and 75 miles of trails are under the management of the District. Government

Thousand Oaks is a General Law City with a Council/Manager form of government. Under this type government, the City Council is the policy-making body, appointing the City Manager who is responsible for carrying out Council policy. The current City Manager is MaryJane V. Lazz.

The Council consists of five members elected from the City at-large. Councilmembers serve four-year staggered terms. Municipal (local) elections are held in November of even-numbered years. The Council annually selects a Mayor who serves as presiding officer during City Council meetings which are scheduled every Tuesday night except the fifth Tuesday of the month. (The month of August is recessed.) Besides appointing a City Manager, Council duties include appointing a City Attorney and members of City Committees and Commissions, adopting a two-year budget, enacting legislation and establishing basic City policy. Council meetings are televised live on TOTV-Channel 10, a government access television channel providing Thousand Oaks' citizens a window on government.

Council members nominate and the Mayor appoints individuals to serve on the Planning Commission, Arts Commission, Youth Commission, Council on Aging, Thousand Oaks Performing Arts Center Board of Governors, Traffic and Transportation Advisory Commission, as well as other boards and committees.
